Over the past few months, there has been a consultation period following Cheshire East Council’s three Article 4 Directions on the town of Crewe. This consultation period began in October 2020 and came to an end on 11th January 2021. All representations received are now being considered before any decision is taken.
The conversion of a dwelling (C3) to a house in multiple occupation (C4) does not ordinarily require planning permission, as long as the property will house no more than six unrelated inhabitants. These changes of use are normally ‘permitted development’. However, the introduction of an Article 4 area means that those wishing to convert C3 buildings to C4 will need to obtain planning permission from the local council.
If the Directions are confirmed, they will come into force on the 1 November 2021.
Areas of Crewe that will be affected by the Directions include streets between Nantwich Road and West Street, as well as a smaller area around Hungerford Road.
